Yoko Ono's Whimsical Instructions in 'Grapefruit'

Take the sound of the room breathing. Send the smell of the moon. Draw a map to get lost.

These are all prompts from Yoko Ono’s “Grapefruit,” a whimsical art book of instructions, poems, and drawings that she published in 1964. She called them “event scores,” or performance art to be carried out by the reader. Some of them are easily executed (“light a match and watch til it goes out”) and others feel like invitations to imagine (“send a smell to the moon”).
